Stage 2, mathematics, Year B – Unit 37

This 2-week unit develops the big idea that multiplicative thinking involves flexible use of multiplication and division concepts, strategies and representations.

Syllabus

Syllabus outcomes from Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (2022) © NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for and on behalf of the Crown in right of the State of New South Wales, 2024.

Students are provided opportunities to:

  • investigate arrays and partially covered area models to support multiplicative thinking
  • apply knowledge of multiplication to estimate, measure and compare area using square centimetres and square metres
  • measure and compare volume using the layer structure and recording in cubic centimetres.

Multiplicative relations A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-MR-01

Represent and solve problems involving multiplication fact families

Multiplicative relations B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-MR-01, MA2-MR-02

  • Use known number facts and strategies
  • Use the structure of the area model to represent multiplication and division
  • Use number properties to find related multiplication facts
  • Represent and solve word problems with number sentences involving multiplication or division

Two-dimensional spatial structure A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-2DS-01, MA2-2DS-03

  • 2D shapes: Compare and describe features of two-dimensional shapes
  • Area: Use square centimetres to measure and estimate the areas of rectangles
  • Area: Use square metres to measure and estimate the areas of rectangles

Two-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-2DS-01, MA2-2DS-03

  • Area: Measure the areas of shapes using the grid structure
  • Area: Compare surfaces using familiar metric units of area

Three-dimensional spatial structure A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-3DS-01

  • 3D objects: Make models of three-dimensional objects to compare and describe key features
  • Volume: Compare objects using familiar metric units of volume

Three-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-3DS-01

3D objects: Connect three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional representations
