This sample unit explores the big idea 'equal means equivalent', when working in Stage 1.

Students are provided with opportunities to:

  • use balance to explore equivalence
  • combine numbers that bond to form 20
  • identify the equal sign and its purpose.

  • Use counting sequences of ones with two-digit numbers and beyond
  • Represent the structure of groups of ten in whole numbers
  • Represent numbers on a line

  • Use advanced count-by-one strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Recognise and recall number bonds up to ten
  • Use flexible strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Represent equality

Combining and separating quantities B – MAO-WM-01, MA1-CSQ-01

  • Represent and reason about additive relations
  • Use knowledge of equality to solve related problems

Non-spatial measure A – MAO-WM-01, MA1-NSM-01

Mass: Investigate mass using an equal-arm balance
