Stage 3, mathematics, Year B – Unit 23

This unit develops the big idea that what needs to be measured determines the unit of measurement.

Students are provided with opportunities to:

  • measure and compare lengths of objects using millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres
  • measure, create and compare perimeters of two-dimensional shapes
  • read and represent timetables in 12-hour and 24-hour time.

Geometric measure A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-GM-02

  • Length: Use metres and kilometres for length and distances
  • Length: Measure lengths to find perimeters

Geometric measure B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-GM-02

  • Length: Connect decimal representations to the metric system
  • Length: Convert between common metric units of length
  • Length: Solve problems involving the comparison of lengths using appropriate units

Two-dimensional spatial structure A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-2DS-01

2D shapes: Classify two-dimensional shapes and describe their properties

Two-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-2DS-01

2D shapes: Dissect two-dimensional shapes and rearrange them using translations, reflections and rotations

Non-spatial measure A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-NSM-02

Time: Compare 12- and 24-hour time systems and convert between them

Non-spatial measure B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-NSM-02

Time: Solve problems involving duration, using 12- and 24-hour time
