Stage 2, mathematics, Year B – Unit 32
This 2-week, Year B unit develops the big idea that understanding relationships between properties of two-dimensional shapes helps visualise and organise spaces in the world.

Students are provided opportunities to:
- combine and split common shapes to create other common two-dimensional shapes
- transform shapes by reflecting, translating, and rotating
- measure and compare the areas of shapes using the grid structure and familiar metric units of area
Multiplicative relations A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-MR-01
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication fact families
Multiplicative relations B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-MR-01, MA2-MR-02
- Use the structure of the area model to represent multiplication and division
- Use number properties to find related multiplication facts
- Operate with multiples of 10
- Represent and solve word problems with number sentences involving multiplication or division
Two-dimensional spatial structure A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-2DS-02
2D shapes: Transform shapes by reflecting, translating and rotating
Two-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-2DS-01, MA2-2DS-02, MA2-2DS-03
- 2D shapes: Create two-dimensional shapes that result from combining and splitting common shapes
- 2D shapes: Create symmetrical patterns and shapes
- Area: Measure the areas of shapes using the grid structure
- Area: Compare surfaces using familiar metric units of area
