Mathematics – Stage 1 – Year B – Unit 21

Collections of ten are really useful – this unit introduces students to the big idea that collections of 10 are really useful.

In this unit students will learn to:

  • sort objects and numbers according to their attributes
  • notice, wonder, and ask questions about objects and collections
  • collect and play informally with objects, such as pattern blocks and counters
  • count large collections of objects by grouping them into tens
  • collect and analyse data.

  • Represent and reason about additive strategies
  • Use knowledge of equality to solve related problems
  • Form multiples of ten when adding and subtracting two-digit numbers
Two-dimensional spatial structure A– MAO-WM-01, MA1-2DS-01, MA1-2DS-02
  • Recognise and classify shapes using obvious features
Two-dimensional spatial structure B– MAO-WM-01, MA1-2DS-01, MA1-2DS-02
  • Represent, combine and separate two-dimensional shapes

  • Ask questions and gather data
  • Represent data with objects and drawings and describe the displays

  • Identify a question of interest and gather relevant data
  • Create displays of data and interpret them
