Stage 3, mathematics, Year A – Unit 05

This unit introduces the big idea that questions can be asked and answered by interpreting data.

Students are provided with opportunities to:

  • collect categorical and discrete numerical data by observation or survey
  • represent and interpret data presented in tables, column graphs and line graphs, with and without the use of digital technologies
  • recognise, represent and order numbers in the millions and decimals.

Represents numbers A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-RN-01, MA3-RN-02

  • Whole numbers: Recognise, represent and order numbers in the millions
  • Decimals and percentages: Recognise that the place value system can be extended beyond hundredths
  • Decimals and percentages: Compare, order and represent decimals

Represents numbers B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-RN-01

Whole numbers: Locate and represent integers on a number line

Data A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-DATA-01, MA3-DATA-02

  • Collect categorical and discrete numerical data by observation or survey
  • Choose and use appropriate tables and graphs
  • Describe and interpret different datasets in context

Data B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-DATA-02

  • Interpret and compare a range of data displays
  • Interpret data presented in digital media and elsewhere
