# Stage 1, mathematics, Year B – Unit 29

This sample Stage 1 unit continues to explore the big idea of combining and separating quantities.

Students are provided with opportunities to:

• understand that the order in which 2 quantities are combined does not change the result
• represent combining situations in different ways
• use different strategies, such as counting on and counting back.

### Syllabus focus and content groups

Representing whole numbers A and B – MAO-WM-01, MA1-RWN-01, MA1-RWN-02

• Continue and create number patterns
• Represent numbers on a line
• Use counting sequences of ones with two-digit numbers and beyond

Combining and separating quantities – MAO-WM-01, MA1-CSQ-01

• Use flexible strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
• Represent equality

Combining and separating quantities B – MAO-WM-01, MA1-CSQ-01

• Use knowledge of equality to solve related problems

Forming groups A – MAO-WM-01, MA1-FG-01

• Count in multiples using rhythmic and skip counting
• Model and use equal groups of objects to represent multiplication

Forming groups B– MAO-WM-01, MA1-FG-01

Represent and explain multiplication as the combining of equal groups

Non-spatial Measure A – MAO-WM-01, MA1-NSM-01

Mass: Investigate mass using an equal-arm balance

Non-spatial Measure B – MAO-WM-01, MA1-NSM-01
