Directions and guidance to support effective implementation of road safety education.

Road safety is effectively implemented in schools through the guidance of these two departmental policies.

Curriculum planning and programming, assessing and reporting to parents K-12 policy

The department's revised Curriculum planning and programming, assessing and reporting to parents K-12 policy (2025) states:

1.1.3 Road safety education is taught in each stage of learning in the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) syllabus Kindergarten to Year 10 and the 25-hour mandatory course for stage 6 students, Life Ready.
The Road safety education procedures provide detailed directions and guidance for effective implementation of road safety education in NSW public schools, Kindergarten to Year 12.

The Road Safety Education Procedures states schools should adopt a whole-school approach to effectively implement road safety education by:

1.1 providing quality teaching through the curriculum

1.2 communicating with parents, carers and the community

1.3 managing road safety environment and culture.

Student health and wellbeing policy

The department's revised Student health and wellbeing policy (2025) states:

1.3 Schools recognise physical activity is essential for the overall wellbeing of students.
2.3 The department seeks to provide opportunities for students to learn about and practise ways to adopt and maintain a healthy, productive and active life through curriculum and pedagogy and the Wellbeing Framework for Schools.
The Wellbeing Framework for Schools adopts a strengths-based approach, enabling schools to build on each student’s individual strengths. This approach helps position students to succeed and thrive throughout their lives.

A key aspect of student wellbeing is physical wellbeing, which refers to the extent to which students feel physically safe and healthy. To support physical wellbeing, the Wellbeing Framework encourages schools to:

The Road Safety Education team provides tailored professional learning and resources that support teachers to deliver best practice road safety education as part of PDHPE.

We support schools with:

  • embedding key road safety messages into teaching and learning
  • building teacher capacity to create contextualised resources
  • guiding whole-school approaches to promote safe, active travel.

Additionally, we offer advice to principals on managing road safety issues, implementing relevant policies, and fulfiling duty of care responsibilities.
