Middle Harbour Public School: teaching road safety in Mandarin

Frances Lee, the school's Mandarin teacher (RFF), attended our Road safety education: Safer behaviours through PDHPE K-6 Workshop. After attending Frances decided she could focus on road safety by getting students to record and publish key road safety messages in Mandarin.

Using the local environment students demonstrated how to cross the road safely, fit a seatbelt correctly, wear a helmet properly and ride a bike away from busy roads. The audio script was delivered in Mandarin.

Frances said the whole school took on an excited buzz as students relished the opportunity to learn new skills in ICT, audio-visual production and of course, speaking Mandarin while learning to be safe.

Going forward Frances plans to run the project again next year and foresees even more success as teachers and students now know what to expect and successfully share the road safety messages in an engaging way.

Here are three videos students created using Mandarin to explain safe road user behaviours.
