Reconciliation week: Speak up for languages and road safety

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is Be Brave Make Change. It outlines 19 actions for change to benefit all Australians.

The Road Safety Education Program would like to challenge you and your students to look at Action 15 Speak up for Languages.

Road safety messages are simple statements that promote safe road user behaviours. Imagine the impact if they were translated into the language of the traditional custodians of your land and shared with your school community!

While not all English words can be translated into Aboriginal languages/dialects, the message can also be conveyed through images and symbols.

First Languages Australia has resources to help expand the understanding of Australian Aboriginal languages.

Contact us at roadsafetyed@det.nsw.edu.au if you want any assistance or have other great ideas you would like to share.
