Summary

The NSW Proud Schools Pilot is an initiative by the NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC). The framework involves a coordinated approach between NSW government agencies and 12 secondary schools to address homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism, and provide a safe and supportive environment for same sex attracted and gender questioning students. Consultancy firm, ARTD Consultants evaluated data from the early introduction of the pilot and post implementation. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the change in attitudes and practices among students and staff over the time, and examine what programs worked for schools across different situations and contexts. Outcomes were measured using a combination analysis of pre- and post-checklists, individual and group interviews, and the review of school plans. The results showed that it was feasible for schools to implement strategies to promote a safe and supportive environment for same sex attracted and gender questioning young people, and that these efforts brought about some positive changes in the short term.
