Leading early numeracy improvement
Equips school leaders and teachers with focused, evidence-informed professional learning to drive measurable improvement in numeracy instruction.
Purpose
This professional learning series equips participants with the knowledge, tools and evidence-based resources to implement exemplary numeracy instruction in their schools.
This six-part professional learning is aligned to the NSW Mathematics K-10 syllabus and will strengthen leader and teacher capability to drive high-impact explicit teaching practices.
Who should participate?
- Assistant Principals, Curriculum and Instruction
- School leaders of numeracy Kindergarten to Year 2
- Teachers of Kindergarten to Year 2
We encourage leaders and teachers to participate in sessions together, either as a school team or across a principal network.
Mode of delivery
Live webinar series will be delivered virtually across 2026 (blended learning).
Sessions recordings will be available shortly after live delivery.
Content
This professional learning will support participants to:
- strengthen understanding of the role of leaders and teachers in targeting numeracy improvement
- plan for implementation of exemplary early numeracy instruction in their context
- conduct an in-depth analysis of their Year 1 Number Screening Check data
- enhance understanding of explicit teaching strategies that promote automaticity of foundational numeracy skills supporting learning across the curriculum.

Webinars 3 and 4: Mastery sessions
Duration: 90 minutes each
These sessions are led by Associate Professor Chrissy Monteleone, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, School of Education at La Trobe University.
A/Prof Monteleone explores the research underpinning explicit teaching and retrieval practice in early numeracy, including how to develop mathematical fluency beyond rote learning. Participants examine the instructional hierarchy, Gradual Release of Responsibility, and questioning techniques that promote deep mathematical reasoning. Through analysis of exemplary classroom practice, the sessions address common misconceptions, building clarity about what high impact mathematics instruction looks like in action.
Webinar 5: Planning for school excellence
Duration: 60 minutes
Grounded in the School Excellence Cycle and the Literacy and numeracy priorities, this session highlights data-informed school leadership, implementation science, and proven enablers known to drive improvement. Participants reflect on existing initiatives and determine actions to strengthen early numeracy instruction in their schools.
