Effective reading instruction suite

Purpose

The Effective reading instruction suite of professional learning supports teachers to deepen their understanding of evidence-based reading instruction.

Who should participate?

Kindergarten to Year 6 school leaders and teachers

Mode of delivery

Self-paced online learning.

Content

Each course equips teachers with essential knowledge and strategies to enhance their instructional skills, apply evidence-based practices, and supports the improvement of student literacy outcomes. The suite includes:

  • oral and written language
  • linguistics
  • language fundamentals
  • reading comprehension.

Teachers can complete the courses in any order or follow the recommended order of completion as listed.

The Effective reading instruction suite of professional learning has been developed in collaboration with Professor Pamela Snow and Professor Tanya Serry, founders of LaTrobe University’s Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab.

Effective reading instruction: Oral and written language

Supports teachers to understand the important role that oral language plays in developing reading and writing skills.

Completing this course will help participants to:

  • gain an understanding of oral language
  • learn all aspects of oral language that need to work together
  • understand the distinction between biologically primary and secondary functions
  • explore the similarities and differences between spoken and written language.

Effective reading instruction: Linguistics

Supports teachers to understand the linguistic structure of Standard Australian English which is central to delivering high quality reading instruction.

Completing this course will help participants to:

  • gain key understandings about vowels, consonants, phonemes and graphemes
  • explore the cumulative nature of teaching phonic knowledge and how we transition from teaching the simple code to the complex code.

Effective reading instruction: Language fundamentals

Supports teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the language and knowledge, fundamental skills for reading (and writing).

Completing this course will help participants to:

  • gain a deeper understanding of vocabulary, syntax, morphology and etymology
  • discover how growth in language fundamentals is important for reading
  • explore the tiers of vocabulary
  • examine explicit and implicit vocabulary growth
  • develop an awareness of how an understanding of morphology and etymology can support word identification, spelling and reading comprehension.

Effective reading instruction: Reading comprehension

Supports teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the components of reading comprehension and the implications for classroom practice.

Completing this course will help participants to:

  • understand the components of reading comprehension, including background knowledge
  • explore how an understanding of the components of reading comprehension can be applied to classroom practice.
