Effective sentence-level instruction​ 

Purpose

This online professional learning explores teaching strategies to support secondary students to compose effective sentences in their written texts throughout curriculum learning.

Participants engaging in this course will learn to:

  • identify sentence-level writing demands in the syllabuses
  • use a range of explicit teaching strategies to support effective sentence instruction in the classroom
  • monitor, assess and provide feedback on sentence construction to support student achievement.

Content

This online course includes 3 sections:

  • Section 1: Sentence writing in secondary school
  • Section 2: Sentence writing in the classroom
  • Section 3: Assessment and monitoring

The module also includes writing samples and illustration of practice videos to provide models of explicit teaching, assessment and feedback strategies to support writing improvement through the secondary curriculum.

Completing this course will help you to:

  • engage with the evidence base for effective sentence-level writing instruction

  • consider the sentence-level demands in your syllabus/es

  • review the importance of syntax, grammar and punctuation in supporting students to compose effective sentences in their writing.

  • explore a range of teaching strategies for explicit sentence-level instruction

  • reflect on the opportunities to develop student sentence-level writing skills in your curriculum context

Note: It is recommended participants first complete ‘Secondary writing –Introductory module’ to develop their understanding of the writing evidence base. Familiarity with the writing evidence base and frameworks is assumed prior knowledge for this module.

Secondary writing – Effective sentence-level instruction will contribute to 2 hours of NESA Accredited PD towards maintaining teacher accreditation in NSW. See MyPL for details of the specific Australian Professional Standards for Teachers addressed.
