A guide to duty of care responsibilities for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships in NSW Government Schools
School based apprenticeships and traineeships operate over an extended period of time (normally 2 years).
Each requires preparation before commencement and ongoing monitoring and management.
The Duty of Care process includes information and documentation for each stage of the school based apprenticeship and traineeship.
School principals and the NSW Department of Education & Training staff have specific duty of care responsibilities for their students.
These responsibilities include:
- minimising potential risk to students in SBATs in relation to child protection, workplace safety and supervision in the workplace
- monitoring the progress, safety and welfare of students in SBATs
- using the notifications process to ensure follow-up of incidents concerning school based apprentices or trainees.
- be familiar with the Department's advice regarding student safety as well as restricted and prohibited activities
For further information please contact Senior Pathways on 9244 5635 or seniorpathways@det.nsw.edu.au
Duty of care requirements for school based traineeships in Primary Industries
School based traineeships in Primary Industries provide entry level occupational outcomes in agriculture.
Job roles include assistant animal attendant or stockperson, assistant farm or station hand, assistant farm or station worker and assistant farm or station labourer.
It is recognised that interaction with equipment and animals whilst undertaking farming duties may pose risk for students, particularly where experience is limited.

Business reporting
The intended purpose of these reports is to quantify NSW apprenticeship and traineeship contract approvals, completions and in training, as well as funded training activity. There are a number of factors that influence apprenticeships, traineeships and funded training and this data should not be considered in isolation or without due consideration for the broader VET environment.
