Beekeeping – Certificate III

Students undertaking this traineeship can work in the apiary industry as beekeepers. This qualification provides an excellent grounding in extraction and pollination services.

At the core level, students will learn to:

  • contribute to OHS processes
  • manage honey bee swarms
  • remove a honey crop from a hive
  • extract honey.

There are around 10,000 registered beekeepers in Australia operating approximately 600,000 hives. Whilst honey is the most common apiary product, beeswax and royal jelly are also extracted.

Outcome on completion of your HSC

  • Certificate III in Beekeeping qualification AHC31818 from AHC Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package
  • Vocational outcome in beekeeping
  • A career path into the Agriculture, Environmental and Related Studies Field of Education, choosing to focus on one of four main industry segments: apiary, queen bee production, marketing and packing, or pollination. You may specialise as apiary inspectors/advisers, or laboratory diagnostic technicians.

Course delivery

  • Both on the job and off the job and can be delivered face-to-face, flexibly or mixed mode.
  • The SBT term is calculated in months from the date of commencement to 31 December of the HSC year

Commitment required

  • Undertake a minimum of 120 days in paid employment and training.
  • Undertake Certificate III Beekeeping course as part of your HSC.
  • The employment and training can be undertaken during school time, after school and during school holidays.

How will you be assessed?

  • Both on the job and off the job through written tests, project work and practical exercises.

This optional course recognises the significant work component involved in the school based apprenticeship.

The course offers an additional 4 units credit towards your HSC.

This HSC VET course does not contribute towards the calculation of the ATAR.

Approval Requirements - School Based Traineeships (SBTs)

In addition to current Apprenticeship and Traineeships in NSW which includes the requirement that a Training Plan be developed for every apprenticeship or traineeship established - the requirements outlined in Commissioners Information Bulletin 732, under School-based Traineeships must be satisfied.
