Implementing the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Purpose

This professional learning provides teachers with an opportunity to develop an understanding of how to implement the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and interpret the information it provides for planning for learning.

Content

Completing this online course will help you to:

  • explore the place of phonics in learning to read
  • understand where phonics is included in the syllabus
  • identify what the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will assess
  • understand why pseudo words are used in the assessment
  • explore the student materials
  • learn how to administer the assessment
  • record student responses in the online tool
  • explore what the assessment can tell us about a student’s progress in phonics.

Module 1: Why is phonics important?

Participants explore the place of phonics in learning to read and understand where phonics is included in the syllabus (20 minutes).

Module 2: Exploring the assessment

Participants identify what the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check assesses, explore the student materials and develop an understanding of why pseudo words are used in the assessment (20 minutes).

Module 3: How to administer the assessment

Participants learn how to administer the assessment and record the student responses in the online tool (40 minutes).

Module 4: Interpreting the information

Participants explore what the assessment can tell us about a student’s progress in phonics (40 minutes).
