Purpose

This professional learning provides K-6 teachers with an opportunity to explore the practical application of  evidence-based teaching of reading.

The focus will be on the what, why and how of fluency and its important role in effective reading instruction. Teachers will be given opportunities to gain an understanding of how fluency can be explicitly taught, and the strong relationship to the other components of effective reading instruction.  

Who should participate?

K-6 teachers.

Mode of delivery

Blended learning - a mix of self-paced and facilitator-led learning delivered via MS Teams.

Content

The online course includes four modules,

• Modules 1 and 2 are self-paced learning .
  
• Modules 3 and 4 are facilitated live sessions.
  

Completing this course will help you to:

• explore the important role that fluency has in the reading process
  

• define fluency and understand the components of fluent reading
  

• assess fluency in the classroom to identify the needs of your students
  

• investigate teaching strategies to apply effectively into your classroom practice
  

• explicitly teach and plan for quality fluency instruction in the classroom.
  

'Fluency on Teams Blended Learning' will contribute to NESA Accredited PD towards maintaining teacher accreditation in NSW. See MyPL for details of the specific Australian Professional Standards for Teachers addressed.

There are 2 sessions available each term.

Term 2

• Wednesday 7 May (9:30am to 12:30pm)
• Thursday 13 June (12:30pm to 3:30pm)

Term 3

• Tuesday 30 July (9:30am to 12:30pm)
• Thursday 29 August (12:30pm to 3:30pm)

Term 4

• Tuesday 22 October (9:30am to 12:30pm)
• Thursday 7 November (12:30pm to 3:30pm)
