Closing the Gap
NSW Department of Education Closing the Gap initiatives
The National Agreement on Closing the Gap is a commitment to improving life outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia. The NSW Department of Education plays a pivotal role in this effort, working to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have the same opportunities to learn, succeed, and thrive. Through priority reforms and socio-economic targets, we are embedding meaningful change in education systems, policies, and practice.
Our Key Priorities
1. Formal partnerships and shared decision making
True progress happens when decisions are made in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. The department is committed to co-design policies and programs that affect Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and their families, ensuring they are involved in decision making. Engaging with local Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups (AECGs) is a key part of this approach, strengthening collaboration at every level.
2. Building the community controlled sector
Aboriginal community controlled organisations play a crucial in delivering services that meet the specific needs of their communities. The department is working to increase investment and capacity building with these organisations, empowering them to lead solutions that improve educational outcomes.
3. Transforming government organisations
To create a truly inclusive education system, the department is committed to systemic and structural transformation change that embeds cultural awareness and responsiveness in all aspects of our work. This includes mandatory cultural education and anti-racism training for staff to address barriers and reduce experiences of racism for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families, and staff.
4. Shared access to data and information at a regional level
Access to data empowers communities to make informed decisions. The department is working towards Indigenous data sovereignty, ensuring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples have the tools and knowledge they need to shape their educational journeys.
5. Employment, business growth, and economic prosperity
Education is a key pathway to economic empowerment. The department is committed to creating opportunities that connect education, training, and employment with the aspirations of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. These efforts help drive business growth, job creation, and long term economic success.
