Progress and Ongoing Efforts

A major milestone has been reached in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), where more Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children are accessing quality early learning than ever before. By investing in culturally responsive and inclusive programs, strengthening community led solutions, and fostering strong partnerships, we are laying the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Our commitment goes beyond early learning. We are dedicated to ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students experience an education that reflects their cultures, communities, and aspirations.

One way we are achieving this is by supporting Aboriginal led education and training programs. The department is investing in Aboriginal Community Controlled Registered Training Organisations to ensure education and training are developed, delivered, and led by Aboriginal people, meeting the specific needs of their communities.

Through Skills & Workforce Programs, a Community of Practice has been established, bringing together Aboriginal owned and operated training organisations in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). This collaboration is shaping training programs that reinforce self determination and give communities greater control over education and training pathways.

This investment is improving training facilities, ensuring culturally responsive learning environments. It also provides mentoring and tailored support to help students succeed while expanding learning opportunities through new and updated resources. Additional travel support for students in regional and remote areas is removing barriers and increasing access to education and training.

By strengthening Aboriginal led education, we are creating greater opportunities and stronger outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students across all stages of learning.

The NSW Department of Education is committed to Closing the Gap by strengthening partnerships, building cultural understanding, and embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across education.

Key actions include:

  • Deepening partnerships with the NSW AECG and other Aboriginal community controlled organisations to ensure Aboriginal voices guide decision making.
  • Providing cultural competency training for educators to build awareness, respect, and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
  • Embedding Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives into the curriculum, so all students benefit from inclusive and meaningful learning experiences.
  • Fostering strong relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families and communities to create a supportive and engaging school environment.
  • These efforts are aimed at creating culturally inclusive, and responsive learning environments where Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students feel valued and supported to succeed.
  • By embracing these reforms, the NSW Department of Education is working towards a future where all students have equal opportunities to thrive, contributing to the broader goal of Closing the Gap.
