Assessing ‘Interacting’

Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) – support for assessing the ‘Interacting’ outcomes, including through card play.

In the Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022), the ‘Interacting’ focus area, and its related Stage 4 and Stage 5 outcomes, require students to exchange and negotiate meaning to interact in the target language. Negotiating meaning relates to the strategies we use to keep communication flowing. To support students to learn this skill, we need to embed an element of ‘the unknown’ into interactions, to encourage a degree of spontaneity.

  • The guidelines explore assessment of ‘Interacting’, through both formative and summative assessment opportunities, including with large classes.
  • The sample card play game showcases how assessment of ‘Interacting’ can occur while students are interacting while playing a card game.
