We acknowledge and respect the members of the Deaf Community in Australia, who preserve their rich heritage, culture and our language, Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
We also acknowledge our custodians of Auslan, promoting awareness, equality and access through our sign language. Through Auslan, we inspire future leaders in our deaf community to continue our legacy and heritage.

Speaker
Hello everyone.
I trust you are all well. Why am I here today? I want to talk about clapping in the Deaf community.
When there’s a big audience, and we go to a speech in an auditorium and when it’s finished, people clap with their hands.
[Speaker claps]
Do Deaf people clap? No. Why? We can’t hear. How do we clap? We wave, like a big wave in the air.
When it’s finished, it’s easy to see the waving. Hearing people clap, it’s good for presenters who can hear. Deaf presenters can’t hear, but can see the Deaf applause. So we clap by waving in the air.
Okay. See you!
