HSC Results

The HSC Results report shows the school performance in the Higher School Certificate (HSC) within courses across each key learning area (KLA)

Executive Directors and Directors of public schools can see all schools in their principal network.

How will this report benefit me?

The HSC Results Report allows a school to view the distribution of results for all courses within a KLA.

What does the HSC Results report provide?

Note: Results for students sitting HSC courses in non-government schools or TAFE NSW sites will not appear as only DoE schools data appears in Scout for the HSC.

Page 1 – HSC Results (Box Plots)

Distribution of Scaled HSC Score by Course

This boxplot and whisker chart shows the distribution of results for students in the selected calendar year and key learning area.

Hover over the chart to view the following metrics:

  • # Samples - Number of students who sat the assessment in that course
  • Maximum - The highest result achieved in the course by a member of the cohort
  • Quartile 3 - The score that is greater than 75% of the scores achieved by the cohort
  • Median - The score in the middle of the schools distribution for the where 50% of the cohort scored above the score and 50% below
  • Average - The score that represents the central or typical value achieved by students in course (sum of scores achieved divided by number of scores)
  • Quartile 1 - The score that is greater than 25% of the scores achieved by the cohort
  • Minimum - The lowest scored achieved in the course by a member of the cohort

Page 2 – HSC Results by SES

The HSC Results by SES report shows the school performance in the Higher School Certificate (HSC) within each key learning area (KLA) by student socio-economic status (SES).

Schools can evaluate their teaching strategies to ensure that students from all SES backgrounds are supported appropriately in their learning.

Average Scaled HSC Score by Student SES Quarter

  • This line chart displays the average HSC score for students in each SES quarter.
  • The average score is calculated for all courses in a KLA or a single course.
  • As different courses within a KLA are scaled differently. It may be more meaningful to select a single HSC course at time.

Number of Results by School and Year

  • This table displays the number of results in the selected HSC assessment, KLA and/or course.
  • Each student is counted once for each course they have a result for. This means that a student may be counted multiple times in the same KLA, if they did more than one course in the same KLA (e.g. English Advanced and English Extension 1).

Number of Students by SES Quarter

  • This column chart displays the number of students in each SES Quarter who sat the selected assessment, KLA and/or course.
  • The total number may not match the number of students at the school. This could be due to students without an SES recorded.
  • This chart also acts as a slicer for the other visualisations. Click on a single SES to view the scores for that group only, and number of students in that SES only.

Page 3 – HSC Results in Bands

Distribution of Scaled HSC Bands by Course

This clustered column chart shows the distribution of results in bands for students in the selected calendar year and course.

This chart does not show averages; it shows the percentage of students who achieved in each band at the school. A higher band represents higher achievement.

English Standard is selected as the default course. Select a different course in the HSC Course Name slicer to view the distribution for other courses.

A comparison to the state is also provided in this chart. Note that there is no SSSG comparison in this report to allow multi-school selection.

It is recommended to only view one course at a time. Different courses are scaled differently and so combining results for multiple courses may not provide accurate insights.

Number of Students by School and Year

This table shows the number of students in each course by school and year.

Note that if you clear the HSC Course Name slicer, each student in this table will be counted once per course result. This will show an inflated number of students, as most students complete 4-6 courses in the HSC. Use the slicers to select a student group and analyse the data:

  • Executive Director Group
  • Network
  • School - multi-select is allowed on this report. This will allow directors to combine results for multiple small schools.
  • Calendar Year
  • Key Learning Area (page one)
  • HSC Course Name (page two and page three)
  • Enrolment Type Group
  • Gender
  • Aboriginal - The term Aboriginal used in this data set refers to and includes both Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  In NSW the preferred term is Aboriginal, rather than Indigenous or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • EAL/D

How can I use the HSC Results report to support my school self-assessment?

Analyse the difference in the distribution of results both between different courses in the same KLA, and between the same course across different years. This will support SEF elements, Student Performance Measures, and Assessment and Reporting.

What should I look for?

  • Hover over a boxplot to view the score distribution in that course. This chart can be used to show differences between courses within a KLA.
  • Differences between courses is reflective of course difficulty, number of participants and the heterogeneity of student performance between courses within the same KLA. Large spreads of performance within courses and across the KLA demonstrates substantial differences within the cohort.
