Safe working practices and advice

All teachers need to consider personal safety, risk management and safe work procedures.

Teachers in subjects such as visual arts have to assess and manage subject-specific risks. This includes following health and safety procedures for making particular art forms (for example painting, drawing, collage, sculpture), using specialised art spaces, using art equipment such as ovens and kilns, and using art materials.

Safe working areas with enough space and ventilation should be provided (for example, music, dance and drama movement activities).

The following resources are available to support department staff:

Controversial resources

The Controversial resource permission note and Audio visual materials in schools advice have been written to inform teachers and parents of the relevant information for consideration when selecting and seeking permission for using appropriate texts in the classroom.
