School implementation support for Respectful Relationships Education

The Respectful Relationships Education (RRE) program is focused on a whole-school approach to RRE implementation.

School cluster model

Schools that are part of the 'RRE program cluster school model' will use a Learn, Do, Reflect cycle to promote collaboration across school leaders, teachers, support staff and the system. This model of implementation has been adapted from the School Success Model, focusing on a strategic approach to improve student outcomes by providing targeted support to schools and clusters of schools.

Schools that are not selected or self-nominated to be part of the 'RRE program cluster school model' can access RRE support to move through phases of implementation. These phases are outlined with questions, actions and support materials in the roadmaps provided for leaders, curriculum leaders, teachers and whole school staff.

A pilot program (case study schools) will share and scale RRE best practices from schools already implementing RRE.

Implementation model

All schools have access to evidence-based guidance and resources to support their improvement efforts. Each year of implementation, schools should:

  • identify 2 of the 6 components of a RRE whole school approach as focus areas for action
  • establish and maintain a committee to lead RRE implementation
  • use School Excellence Framework-aligned tools, including the RRE Strength Assessment Tool and Contributing Factors Tool to self-assess existing RRE practice and programs
  • create a school action plan outlining goals, timeframes, milestones, activities, success measures, data and evidence for the identified focus areas.

Phases of Respectful Relationships Education implementation

These 3 phases provide a framework for schools to effectively implement RRE as a whole-school approach and continuously improve practices.

Plan

The Plan phase (6 months) focuses on familiarisation and planning. Schools will engage by undertaking self-assessment, identifying priority areas which drive their school-based action plan, increasing understanding of effective RRE practices in schools, and planning for implementation.

This includes understanding the components of RRE, identifying staff and student needs, aligning plans with school initiatives, and planning for evaluation and monitoring.

Schools should reflect on resource needs, time allocation for reflection and evaluation, and the alignment of the implementation plan with the school's overall vision.

Implement

The Implement phase (12 to 18 months) involves capability building, implementation across the whole school, teaching, assessment and evaluation. Schools will enact by actively teaching, assessing and evaluating RRE through the curriculum and across school programs and practices.

This involves putting the planned strategies into action, contextualising for the school community, teaching and assessing student learning across RRE concepts, and reporting on progress.

Schools evaluate the effectiveness of their implementation strategies and make adjustments as needed.

Embed

The Embed phase (6 months to 3 years) aims to solidify sustainable practices.  Schools will strengthen and scale new practices to ensure sustainability.

This involves refining programs and practices, sharing and embedding effective strategies to create a respectful school culture and environment.

The focus is on ensuring that the changes are long-lasting and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
