Supporting the school community

The NSW Department of Education (the department) is committed to keeping children and young people safe and ensuring their wellbeing.

Supporting staff

Domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) is one of the most common risk factors to children's educational outcomes and wellbeing.

Staff wellbeing is also a key focus for the department. The department is committed to supporting and providing a safe workplace environment for employees affected by DFSV. Staff or community members who have lived or living experience with DFSV may talk to someone at work or in the school about their experience.

It is possible that a disclosure may occur, or a staff member may see warning signs and be concerned for the employee’s safety and wellbeing. Department staff can access Domestic and family violence support and assistance.

Confidential support and information is available by calling any of these toll-free numbers 24/7 (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week):

Informing the community about Respectful Relationships Education

There are many misconceptions about what students learn and how they learn in Respectful Relationships Education (RRE). Some aspects of RRE may be viewed as sensitive or controversial, such as learning about abuse, consent, respectful relationships, sextortion, sexual coercion and violence.

When content may be viewed as controversial, communication with families is particularly important. Some community groups may wish to know what is being taught as part of RRE. How the community is informed about RRE delivery is a school-based decision.

Schools may consider:

  • including information on their website
  • providing a link to the department’s RRE website in their newsletter.
