ScR NAPLAN Results

The ScR NAPLAN Results report provides information on school NAPLAN Results across government schools in NSW.

This report is available only to The School Communications and Engagement unit (SCE).

How will this report benefit me?

SCE staff can view NAPLAN Results for a school, and trends such as increasing or decreasing NAPLAN Results over time. Multiple schools within the same geographical area can be compared on the same chart.

What does the ScR NAPLAN Results report provide?

The following visualisations are available in this report:

Average Assessment Scaled Score by Year and School

  • This line chart displays NAPLAN results by year for individual government and non-government schools.
  • Select one or more schools and compare all selected schools on the same chart.
  • The average result for the Reading and Numeracy domains is displayed. These two domains are the best indicators of a school’s performance.
  • NAPLAN results for non-government schools are included where available. Please note that non-government schools may appear in the list but results have not been found for them.
  • 10 years of historical data will eventually be included, however, the earliest year displayed is 2010. This is due to the unavailability of NAPLAN data prior to this year.
  • Only government schools are available in this list. The data steward for non-government schools did not give permission for non-government NAPLAN results to be included.
  • Note that the Hover box is a fixed height (this is a Power BI limitation). This means that only the first 4-5 schools (going in alphabetical order) will be displayed. To view the number of students for a school that is not in the hover box, select the school in the School Name slicer, then hover over the school line again.

Use the following slicers to filter and analyse the data:

  • School Name – Choose a school in this slicer first. This will select the local area to analyse.

  • School Distance Band Name – Choose one or more distance bands to view. Note that they are set up as concentric rings. To view all schools within 10km of the proximity school, you need to select both the 5km and 10km distance bands.

  • Selected School Name by Distance – Once the previous two slicers are set, all schools within the selected distance band and sector will appear in this slicer. Use this slicer to select or deselect schools to appear in the chart.

  • NAPLAN Assessment – Use this to select the NAPLAN assessment, e.g. NAPLAN 5. You can select multiple assessments by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the assessment. If all assessments are deselected, the charts will display the average score for all assessments at the school. For a primary school, this would be NAPLAN 3 and 5. For a high school, this would be NAPLAN 7 and 9.

  • Type – Use this slicer to select the type of school, e.g. secondary school.
  • Gender – Use this slicer to select the gender.

  • Aboriginality – Use this slicer to select the aboriginality.
  • EAL/D – use this slicer to select average results for students who have been identified as speaking English as a second language or dialect.

What should I look for?

  • Schools with a significant upwards or downward trend in average NAPLAN Results over the years.
  • A school that is significantly above or below other local schools.
  • Note that record suppression is in place for any schools where there were fewer than 5 students undertaking an assessment in any given year. This will affect the data for schools with low numbers of students, e.g. rural and remote schools. It will appear that there is no data for that school, assessment and year combination. This was required by the data steward for the purpose of approving the use of this data.
  • No record suppression was done at the cluster level, only at the school level.
  • Note that average NAPLAN results may not be an accurate representation of the school, where low numbers of students have completed the assessment. For example, a school with less than 10 students in each year, may have wildly fluctuating NAPLAN results from year to year. This could be due to differences in the student cohorts, rather than any teaching strategies at the school. Please review the NAPLAN results in conjunction with the number of students in each year to interpret these results appropriately.

Where does this data come from?

  • Historical NAPLAN Results (including non-government schools) come from NAPLAN.

How frequently is data updated?

  • Historical NAPLAN Results are updated annually after they are released in August.
