The AsP Primary Transition report provides information on what the destination secondary schools are for a primary cluster and its schools.

This report is available only to Asset Planners in the Planning and Demography unit.

How will this report benefit me?

Users can view the destination schools for primary schools in a cluster, including non-government secondary schools. Asset planners can use this information to understand where the students in a primary cluster are enrolling in high school.

It also allows comparison with non-government school enrolments; increasing or decreasing non-government enrolments have a direct impact on the number of places that need to be made available for students in government schools.

What does the AsP Enrolment report provide?

The following visualisations are available in this report:

Top Destination High Schools

• This column chart displays the top 10 secondary destination schools for the selected cluster and primary school.
• 10 years of historical data will eventually be included, however the earliest year displayed is 2011.  This is due to unavailability of high-quality data prior to this year.
• Non-government schools are included where known.
• Some schools and years have a column labelled “unknown”. This means the students went to interstate/overseas secondary schools, or they did not do the NAPLAN 7 assessment, so a future record was not found for them. For example schools/clusters near the border with another state will have a large unknown component. This indicates that students may have gone to a high school in the state across the border.  Due to privacy legislation we only receive NAPLAN data for NSW.
• If there are more than 10 schools listed, this means there are multiple schools in the equal 10^th spot. This is not a report error.

High School Transition %

• This doughnut chart displays all known secondary schools that students in the selected primary cluster/school went to for their secondary education.
• Non-government schools are included where known. This is based on NAPLAN 5 and 7 data, i.e. for students at the selected primary cluster/school, their NAPLAN 7 school is listed.
• Click on the Focus Mode button on the top right-hand corner to expand the chart and view all schools.
• Hover over any slice to view the primary school name and number of students.

Year 7 Destination Schools

• This table displays all known destination high schools with the number of students that went to each school.
• The total at the bottom of the table equals the number of students who were enrolled at the selected primary school or cluster in Year 5 of the selected calendar year.

Cluster

Use this slicer to select a cluster and its schools to analyse. You can scroll to find the cluster you need, or use the search bar at the top of the slicer.

Notes:

• To improve report loading times, this slicer will default to the first cluster in the list.
• You can only select one cluster at a time in this report.
• Click on the arrow to the left of the cluster name to view the schools for a cluster. You can select a single school from the cluster to view, or the whole cluster.
• This slicer controls both charts. The cluster and schools displayed in the charts will change based on the cluster selected.

Year 5 Enrolment Year

Use this slicer to select a cohort, i.e. the students enrolled in year 5 in the selected year.

What should I look for?

• Are principals enrolling more out-of-zone students than they should?
• Are many of our primary students going onto non-government secondary schools? This may inform future demographic projections for the cluster.
• Are there any high schools that are increasing or decreasing the number of students they take? If there have been no boundary changes this may indicate a change of parental choice.
• The “unknown” component is made up of students who were not enrolled in NSW in year 7 (either out of state or outside Australia), and students who were enrolled in a NSW non-government school and did not do the NAPLAN 7 assessment.
• Note that because there is a 2 year lag in the availability of this data, we have hidden the latest 2 calendar years from this report. This is not a report error.
• Note that the “unknown” component for the latest available year may be quite large until August of the current year.  For example, if you have selected Year 5 2015, any students who went to non-government high schools will be in the “Unknown” component until August 2017 when their NAPLAN 7 data becomes available. At this point the actual schools will become known.
• Annual enrolment census – student level data. For all students in Year 5 at the selected primary school or cluster, the school they attended for Year 7 (i.e. 2 years later) is identified.

Where does this data come from?

• NAPLAN – where a year 7 record was not found in the enrolment data for a student, but a NAPLAN 7 record was found, this is used instead.

How frequently is data updated?

• Historical enrolments are updated annually after the Enrolment census is completed in August.
• NAPLAN data is updated annually after NAPLAN results are released.
