Student Item Analysis

The Student Item Analysis report shows how a student has performed by NAPLAN item (i.e. questions).

This report includes all domains except Writing, which is on a separate report.

This report is available to school-based staff only – currently, this includes principals and school executives. From mid-2018, it will also include teachers.

How will this report benefit me?

The report allows schools to analyse the NAPLAN performance of individual students for each assessment question. Used in conjunction with the school-level report, it can indicate which students may need additional help with specific topics.

What does the report provide?

This two-page report presents multiple tables on the first page and a chart on the second page.

Table (Page 1)

Question List

  • This table displays each question in the selected assessment and domain.
  • The description shown is not the actual question text but the outcome expected of that question.
  • The question difficulty is shown. More difficult questions are less likely to have been answered correctly.
  • The question band is shown. The band assigned to a question indicates that students who achieved at that band for their overall score and above would have been expected to get this question right.
  • The student’s response type can be Valid (the student answered the question) or Other (the student did not answer the question or provided an invalid response, e.g. circled every option in for a multiple choice question).
  • Click on a single question in the table to view details for that question in the other tables.

Question Details

  • This table displays details for an individual question, as selected in the Question List table.
  • The actual question text is shown, as well as a more detailed expected outcome.
  • Links to the stimulus and question scan are provided.

Response Details

  • This table displays details for the responses to the individual questions selected above.
  • For multiple-choice questions, each potential response is shown with a flag showing which response is correct.
  • For text response questions, the correct response is shown.
  • The student’s response is shown.
  • Distractor analysis is included where this has been provided by the data owner.

Continuum and Syllabus

  • This table displays the continuum, syllabus ID and syllabus outcome for the individual question selected above.
  • This information is a continuation of the Question Details table, but it was placed in a separate area to maximise screen space.

Chart (Page 2)

Percentage Correct by Question Band

  • This clustered column chart shows the student’s percentage correct for each question band.
  • Each question is given a band from 1-10, which indicates the question’s level of difficulty. More difficult questions have a higher band.
  • The x-axis displays the question band.
  • The y-axis displays the percentage of questions that the student answered correctly.
  • Hover over a data point to view the number of questions in that question band.

Percentage Correct by Syllabus

  • This stacked column chart shows the student’s percentage correct by each syllabus outcome.
  • The x-axis shows the syllabus code, e.g. EN3-3A.
  • The y-axis shows the percentage of questions that the student answered correctly.
  • Hover over a data point to view the syllabus description and the number of questions in that syllabus outcome.

Use the slicers provided to select a student and further analyse the data:

  • Cohort Enrolment Year
  • Cohort Scholastic Year
  • Student Name
  • Enrolment Type Group
  • Assessment
  • Domain – Reading, Numeracy, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation only.
  • Assessment Year – the year the student sat the assessment. This helps to identify the correct year for students who sat the same NAPLAN assessment twice.
  • Gender
  • Aboriginal
  • EAL/D

How can I use this report to support my school self-assessment?
