VALID Student Growth

The Student Growth report shows the VALID growth of students in the selected cohort. Growth assessment for VALID 10 will show the growth between VALID 8 and 10 where the student has sat both exams. (Growth data is currently not available for VALID 8 at this stage as VALID 6 is not compulsory and very few schools have participated.)

This report is available to school-based teaching staff.

How will this report benefit me?

The Student Growth report allows school staff to see which of their students are achieving expected growth, which students are progressing by showing lower growth than expected, and which students are not growing between VALID assessments.

What does the report provide?

This one page report presents two charts:

Number of Students by Growth Type

  • This stacked bar chart shows the number of students in each growth type. This shows the number of students achieving each growth type at the cohort level (excludes unmatched students where no growth data is available).
    Student Growth
  • This column chart shows the growth achieved by each student in the cohort between VALID years.
  • The x-axis displays the student name. Students are ordered by base year score from lowest to highest. (?)
  • The y-axis displays the growth, i.e. growth year score – base year score
  • The red line represents the base year score.
  • Each column represents the growth between the base year and the growth year for one student.
  • Students whose growth is green have achieved expected growth
  • Yellow growth represents students who grew but did not achieve the level of growth required for expected growth.
  • Red (negative) growth represents students who obtained a lower score in the growth year compared to the base year.
  • Students with a blue column do not have a score in the base year. This could mean they were absent from the base VALID assessment, they were not living in Australia at the time, or there may be a data error in the source system where the student has multiple unlinked SRNs. If you believe your student should have a prior score, contact the Scout support team for assistance.
  • To obtain additional information on the student’s performance including the base year score, growth and growth year score hover over the chart. Note that the contents of the hover box change as you move the mouse over the length of the column.

Use the slicers provided to filter and further analyse the data:

  • Cohort Enrolment Year – you must select a value in this slicer for the chart to be meaningful
  • Cohort Scholastic Year – you must select a value in this slicer for the chart to be meaningful
  • Student Name
  • Growth Assessment – currently only available for VALID 10
  • Enrolment Type (Group?)
  • Gender
  • Aboriginal - The term Aboriginal used in this data set refers to and includes both Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In NSW the preferred term is Aboriginal, rather than Indigenous or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • EAL/D

How can I use the report to support my school self-assessment?

This report provides an easy visual display of students’ growth between NAPLAN years.

What should I look for?

  • The number and proportion of students achieving expected growth, growing, and failing to grow between NAPLAN years can be used to identify students who may require additional support to maintain their learning trajectory.
  • Note that the Growth Year Assessment slicer will only include VALID 8 and VALID 10. This is not an error. As this report only measures NAPLAN growth, no growth can be calculated for VALID 6.
  • Furthermore, at this stage, VALID 8 growth will not be provided as participation for VALID 6 is too low at this stage since it is not compulsory.

Where does this data come from?
