Student Scores and Levels

The VALID Student Scores and Levels report compares students to the NSW DoE average scores for each VALID domain and compares students to other students within the cohort.

The report provides school-based teaching staff with access to the prior VALID scores of their current students, or current VALID scores of their past students.

How will this report benefit me?

Knowledge of students’ past performance, especially over the transition period to secondary education, is crucial for the continuity of learning for students. Ready access to students’ previous VALID performance allows teachers to know incoming students’ general ability. Please note that there is limited VALID 6 data as few primary schools participate. This assessment is not compulsory.

Knowledge of students’ future performance, for example Year 8 results for a primary school’s Year 6 cohort, can also assist schools to review the success of their teaching practice with the cohort that has just left.

What does the report provide?

This report presents information on:

Table: Student VALID Scores

  • This table displays the Student’s Name, Aspect, Score and Question Level.
  • Clear the Aspect slicer to obtain scores and bands for all aspects.
  • Note that each student will have up to 5 results for an assessment (one for each aspect)
  • Data from the table can be exported to an Excel or Comma Separated Values file for local analysis.

Chart: Student Scaled Score vs State Average

  • This bar chart compares each student’s overall score with the NSW DoE average scaled score.
  • The students in the cohort are sorted from highest to lowest score as a default view, however you can change the sort to ascending view.

Use the slicers to select a cohort and filter the data for further analysis:

  • Directorate, Network, School
  • Cohort Enrolment year
  • Cohort Scholastic Year
  • Student Name
  • Aspect
  • VALID Assessment – VALID 6, 8, 10
  • Enrolment Type Group

  • EAL/D

How can I use the report to support teaching and learning at my school?

The report allows assessment of the potential needs of the student cohort or class group and individual students to support their learning.

What should I look for?

Students whose performance is markedly different from their peers or the state average, or whose performance on one aspect of VALID is greatly different for the other aspects. Such discrepancies can help teaching staff identify strengths and areas of need for students and flag areas where further investigation of student needs is required.
