System-recognised alternative pathways

Information and advice about alternative curriculum frameworks, including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Years 11 and 12).

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) includes a senior study pathways equivalency for Year 11 and Year 12. The curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP Core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay. Through the DP Core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.

Secondary schools interested in running the IB DP for Years 11 and 12 should enquire with the department’s Secondary Teaching and Learning team.

Schools will have to complete the programme’s accreditation process, which can take up to 2 years. Schools must also have the resources and capacity to teach the programme.

Under the Education Act 1990 No 8, eligible schools must continue to offer the Higher School Certificate (HSC) alongside the IB DP. Students who successfully graduate through the IB programme will still be eligible for an ATAR and entry into universities.
