The Australian colonies
A collection of Stage 3 learning sequences and workbooks, where students look at colonial Australia in the 1800s, the founding of British colonies and the development of a colony.
A six week historical learning sequence comprised of four sequential inquiries where students explore lives of people in Australia's colonial past.
Students undertake four short inquiries:
- Inquiry 1 – a guided inquiry into the reasons for the establishment of British colonies in Australia after 1800
- Inquiry 2 – a guided inquiry into settlement patterns
- Inquiry 3 – a semi-guided inquiry into impacts of settlement
- Inquiry 4 – an independent inquiry into daily colonial life.
Note 1 – These four inquiries are sequential. They provide the understandings needed for the history teaching and learning sequence – Colonial development.
Note 2 – The teaching and learning sequence, Colonial immigration, could follow this learning sequence to create a ten week teaching and learning sequence
Key inquiry questions:
- What do we know about the lives of people in Australia's colonial past and how do we know?
- How did an Australian colony develop over time and why?
- How did colonial settlement change the environment?
- What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped Australian colonies?
