NSW Aboriginal Languages Week aims to raise awareness and support for the reclamation, revitalisation and celebration of Aboriginal Languages in NSW.

About NSW Aboriginal Languages Week

NSW Aboriginal Languages Week, led by the NSW Aboriginal Languages Trust, is held annually from Sunday to Sunday during the week of 24 October to mark the anniversary of the landmark NSW Aboriginal Languages Act 2017, which recognises Aboriginal languages as a vital part of the cultural heritage of NSW. 

The aim of the week is to celebrate, recognise and raise awareness of the ongoing work happening in local communities to reclaim, revitalise and maintain traditional languages. It highlights the teaching and learning of Aboriginal Languages in schools, communities and promotes pride in cultural identity. 

The Department of Education, in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (NSW AECG), encourages schools and students to actively engage in the week’s celebrations. Schools are supported through a range of activities, and resources available on the Department’s website, enabling them to embed Aboriginal Language and Culture into classroom and community celebrations.
