Presenter

This short video shows you some of the features of the new online Technology 7–8 Syllabus. Google 'NSW Curriculum', and it will be the first link which appears. Make sure you then bookmark the page, as you'll find you'll be returning to the new digital curriculum website frequently.

You can see you can access the digital curriculum by Primary, Secondary or Senior. But we're going to access it by going here, by choosing Learning areas. And then clicking on the Technological and Applied Studies. And there you will see all the TAS syllabuses. The syllabuses, which are available in the new digital format, have the red line on top of the box. And then you click on the Technology 7–8 Syllabus, and here it is.

As you can see, the syllabus is now in digital format, and you can find all of the elements of the syllabus via these tabs across the top of the page. In this mid-blue bar, you can see there's a dropdown arrow. When we click on that, you'll see the implementation timeline. We can plan and prepare for the new syllabus in 2024 and 2025, and use the new syllabus to teach from 2026. See the department curriculum reform pages for more information about different implementation timelines.

Let's take a look at the syllabus now, starting with Course overview. This provides some key information related to the syllabus, including Course requirements, how the syllabus is structured, including a diagram of the 4 focus areas and Life Skills information to support students with significant intellectual disability.

At the very bottom, you'll see information about Balance of content as the syllabus provides for using formative and summative assessment to determine instructional priorities and the time needed for students to achieve expected outcomes.

Going back up to the tabs at the top, we have Rationale, then Aim, and Outcomes. The Outcomes tab, you can click on Compare outcomes, and select the ones you like. For example, Stages 4 and Life Skills. Click on Done, and you now have the outcomes you want to see. We can select Show aligned content, and this brings up the related content in each focus area.

There are then 2 ways to access the content for each outcome. We can click here on the Content tab, or we can do it this way, by selecting Show aligned content. You then get these hyperlinks under each outcome. We click on one of those and all the content appears. When viewing the content, we can see the focus area on the left in dark blue. On the right-hand side, we can see the content.

A really nice feature of the digital syllabus is that you can choose to see examples. And examples appear beneath each content point. These can be toggled on and off. Another feature we really like is the Show teaching advice. Teaching advice is available for all focus areas. Over on the left, you can see the remaining focus areas. Each of these is set out in the same way.

To best suit your needs and context, the digital format is customisable, so you can select only the stages you are programming for. You can select to View Life Skills and the outcomes are in a light blue. In the Assessment tab, you can see advice on assessment, the Common Grade Scale, and the course performance descriptors and assessment of Life Skills outcomes. There is also a Glossary. This allows you to search for keywords and vocabulary specific to the Technology 7–8 Syllabus.

Finally, the Teaching and learning support tab will have downloadable documents with sample units and scope and sequences, teaching advice and a bibliography. It is important to know that you can also download the syllabus and print a hard copy. You can select the stages and elements you want. And then download as either a Word document or PDF, as preferred. If using the syllabus as a hard copy, it is critical to continue to check the online version for relevant additional teaching and learning support, or other information that may be updated or provided.
