Designing a wombat environment

An integrated STEM unit where Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students design and create a wombat habitat, applying the Engineering Design Process.

This unit integrates explicit teaching with the Engineering design process to support students in understanding how environments meet the needs of living things, while engaging them in planning, designing and reflecting on their ideas, and supporting creative problem solving.

Design brief

Students will follow the Engineering design process to design, create and evaluate a model wombat habitat that meets the animal’s needs for shelter, food and safety.

The following slide deck, student materials and resources support teachers to implement the unit and illustrate the Engineering Design Process within the context of the project.

Student templates and scaffolds are provided to guide each phase of the design process and support thinking, planning and reflection.
