Tailored professional learning

The Career and Workplace Learning team delivers inclusive professional learning to careers advisers, transition advisers, teachers, and school staff. This training helps strengthen post-school pathways for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, high potential and gifted students, students with disability, and those who speak English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D).

The NSW Department of Education is committed to making sure that students with disability and extra learning needs can access high-quality education at every stage of their schooling. We want all students to learn as much as they can.

To support this, the Department offers professional learning courses designed to help staff provide fair opportunities for students with disability. These use pathways resources, programs, and strategies that fully include these students.

Participants will complete online learning modules to build a clear and consistent understanding of policies, programs, and supports available.

The goals of this training are to help teachers:

  • Apply the inclusive education policy for students with disability during post-school transition.

  • Use the supports available for students with disability.

  • Assist students with disability in their career development.

What you will learn:

  • About disability in Australia and the context of tertiary studies within and beyond NSW public schools.

  • How to plan and arrange fair access to school supports and resources to improve outcomes after school for students with disability.

  • How to share knowledge and information to better support planning for students’ transition after school.

Who is this professional learning for?

Careers advisers, transition advisers, learning and support teams and staff supporting the transition of students with disability.

This professional learning is for careers advisers, transition advisers, teachers, EAL/D teachers working with senior students, school counsellors, year advisers, and executive staff. It is designed to:

  • Increase understanding of the refugee experience and its impacts.
  • Show how schools can work together to support refugee students.
  • Provide strategies for effectively communicating with students from refugee backgrounds and their families.

This online course helps educators support students from refugee backgrounds as they prepare for life after school, including further education, training, and work.

What you will learn:

  • Strategies to support curriculum choices and career decisions.
  • Tools to help students explore post-school options.
  • Guidance on preparing for work, scholarships, and tertiary study
  • Support for EAL/D students striving to meet the HSC minimum standard
  • Inclusive programs that improve learning and wellbeing.

Careers advisers, transition advisers, EAL/Dteachers, and school staff supporting student pathways.

This is a one-day, in-person professional learning session for careers advisers. It gives them the knowledge and skills to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in reaching their education and career goals.

The session focuses on:

  • Culturally responsive teaching.
  • Understanding the strengths and challenges of students, families, and communities.
  • Using Personalised Learning Pathways (PLPs) to support students.
