News - T4L website - new home

Since 2019, the Technology for Learning (T4L) website has been the go-to hub for professional development. News - New Education Digital Strategy

The department has launched our new Education Digital Strategy which provides a clear, action-focused direction for how technology will help drive excellence across the NSW public education system. Placing learners at the centre, it focuses the department’s efforts on 3 interconnected areas:

  1. Strengthening digital foundations by modernising our systems and providing equitable access to technology and support across schools.
  2. Building digital capability so staff, learners and the broader community are empowered to confidently and safely use technology.
  3. Driving digital impact by using technology to enhance learning, simplify services, streamline administrative tasks, and make it easier to engage with the department.

The strategy directly supports Our Plan for NSW Public Education, is grounded in the School Excellence Framework, and was shaped by insights from more than 400 people, including school staff, students, education support staff and representative groups.

You can learn more about the new strategy and our progress to deliver it on the Education Digital Strategy webpage.

Have you ever found yourself searching on the intranet for a policy or Staff Noticeboard article but cannot seem to find it? Try EduSearch!

EduSearch is an experimental search application that combines AI and traditional search technologies to provide more relevant search results from the education.nsw website. Rather than relying solely on simple keyword matching, it is designed to deliver more relevant results by comprehending the meaning and context of search queries. Update - End User Device Update

Following a successful 2025 pilot, End User Device Refresh (EUDR) has moved into rollout. And what is the key to a smooth rollout? Accurate device data!

To make this happen, we’ve launched the device asset management portal within EDConnect.

Teachers sitting at a table talking with a laptop on the table. Teachers sitting at a table talking with a laptop on the table.

This will be the new source of truth for school devices. When we are ready to work with your school, we will make contact and you will be able to log in to view exactly what device data our systems have for your school.

For Principals: In this first instance, the portal data supports your teacher’s laptop allocations. Subsequent school support staff and students’ allocations will also be modelled from the data in your portal.

For ICT Coordinators and TSOs: This portal is designed to support you to maintain equipment registers for your school. You can link devices to specific staff members and flag unique use cases directly in the portal.

In the meantime, please continue using local budgets and processes for immediate device needs so we can continue building a strong digital foundation together.

For questions and support, please contact the team at EUD@det.nsw.edu.au or visit our intranet page for updated FAQs.

Info - Digital Field Services - handy tips

Digital Field Services (DFS) are your technology support team here to help you and your school. Each term they will be arranging scheduled visits to help resolve any issues you may be encountering. During the visits, some common areas of need have been highlighted by the team.

Air-conditioning in server rooms
Wireless access point in a protective case. Wireless access point in a protective case.

Does your server room have air-conditioning? How long has it been since they were serviced or cleaned? Talk to your GA about what should be done to make sure these devices are appropriately serviced to make sure they are working properly and don’t potentially leak water.

Amber (orange) or no lights on Wireless Access Points (WAPs)

Have you noticed if the wireless in your classroom or building is not as strong as usual? First step, look up! Find the WAP in your room and check the lights. If the WAP has no lights on, flashing, or they are showing amber, please log a ticket with EDConnect with the AMS room number (Eg. AR0003) as this will help with troubleshooting the issue and getting it resolved quickly.

Remember, don’t wait for your scheduled visit to occur before logging any issues with EDConnect. Report them straightaway so the team can be prepared before they attend your school.

Info - What's new from Apple

In Week 9 of last term it was announced that CompNow will be the new reseller of Apple products to the NSW DoE. For schools wishing to purchase new Apple devices, you need to update the reseller ID within Apple School Manager. For more information on how to update the reseller ID, please refer to the T4L News for Schools Viva post.

Also, join Apple and special guest, Nicole Dyson, founder of Future Anything, for a discussion on future skills. Nicole will share how schools can make future-focused learning practical and measurable, drawing on her experience working with over a million students. Then hear directly from local industry leaders on the skills and mindsets they're hiring for today, giving you a clear line between workforce needs and curriculum decisions.

The summit will take place at Apple in Sydney on Tuesday 19 May between 9:30 and 12:30pm. For more information, visit the Future skills summit website.

Info - Neurodiversity & Inclusion Digital Tools

In our commitment to inclusive education, we don’t always need to look for "extra" tools; often, the most transformative support is already at our fingertips within the Microsoft, Google, and Apple ecosystems provided to NSW schools. These platforms have transitioned from simple productivity suites into robust accessibility hubs.

Microsoft’s suite, led by the Immersive Reader, offers essential scaffolding for decoding and fluency, while Dictate empowers students to bypass mechanical writing barriers. In the Google Workspace, features like Voice Typing and Reading Mode foster independence by removing visual clutter and supporting those with auditory processing preferences. Complementing these, Apple’s intuitive hardware tools such as Guided Access to aid focus and AssistiveTouch for motor support are essential.

Check out the links above to the T4L Inclusive and Assistive Technology page to access some of the great tools available for you and your students to use in the classroom tomorrow.

Tip - Personal cloud storage

Are you still using the U: drive on your school server or a USB stick to store your personal department files? Have you considered using cloud storage?

Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive are available to safely and securely store those files which are currently on a server or portable media. It is encouraged to migrate these files when you can to begin reaping the benefits of cloud storage, such as:

  • Version history
  • Collaboration and
  • Ease of access across multiple devices.

The first steps to consider would be to choose a cloud location of your choice: either Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. For assistance with this, please refer to the links below to the T4L website:

Keep an eye out for future webinars around personal cloud storage on the Events page.

Tip - Google accessibility tools

Accessibility is key to fostering an inclusive learning environment where every student can engage with content effectively, regardless of their individual needs or learning styles.

By integrating accessible Google tools and features, educators can remove barriers to learning, allowing all students to demonstrate their knowledge and progress in ways that best suit them.

Here are some examples:

  • Captions and transcriptions: essential for students with hearing impairments or noisy environments, ensuring video and audio content is fully accessible. (Google Slides, Videos saved in Google Drive and YouTube videos.)

  • Google Workspace features for executive functioning skills: tools that help students manage tasks, stay organised, and process information:
    • Comments: facilitate targeted feedback and collaborative task management.
    • Smart chips (e.g., drop-downs and checklists): provide structured ways to break down assignments, track progress, and link to resources, aiding in planning and organisation (Google Docs).

For more Google accessibility tools visit the T4L website Inclusive and Assistive Technology page.
