Evaluating a scope a sequence

Evaluating an existing school scope and sequence allows schools to identify strengths in current practice and areas for improvement. Possible criteria to guide your evaluation include:

  • represents a logical sequence of learning that meets syllabus requirements
  • explicitly addresses all outcomes for each stage of learning
  • identifies assessment tasks and when they will occur within the sequence of learning
  • reflects the needs, interests and abilities of all students
  • identifies key concepts and skills as well as the content focus of each unit of work
  • reflects the recursive nature of learning, providing opportunities to revisit outcomes over the stage
  • allows for and works around school-based events
  • builds in flexibility to ensure equitable access to resources
  • coordinates with scope and sequences for other key learning areas
