3–6 multi-age, Year B – Unit 6

This 2-week unit develops the big idea introduced in Year A: that our number system extends infinitely to very large and very small numbers.

Mathematics K–10 Syllabus © 2023 NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for and on behalf of the Crown in right of the State of New South Wales.

Students are provided with opportunities to:

  • read, partition, rename, represent and order numbers up to 6-digits (Stage 2) or up to and including billions (Stage 3)
  • recognise, name, compare, order and represent decimals
  • identify the relationship between addition and subtraction (Stage 2)
  • apply place value knowledge and known strategies when solving addition and subtraction problems for whole numbers and decimals (Stage 3).

The content in this unit is informed by the lessons in Stage 2 Year B Unit 26 and Stage 3 Year B Unit 26. Please refer to these units for additional lesson guidance.

Syllabus outcomes and content groups

Representing numbers using place value A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-RN-01

  • Whole numbers: Read, represent and order numbers to thousands
  • Whole numbers: Apply place value to partition and regroup numbers up to 4 digits

Representing numbers using place value B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-RN-01, MA2-RN-02

  • Whole numbers: Recognise and represent numbers that are 10, 100 or 1000 times as large
  • Decimals: Extend the application of the place value system from whole numbers to tenths and hundredths
  • Decimals: Make connections between fractions and decimal notation

Additive relations A – MAO-WM-01, MA2-AR-01

Select strategies flexibly to solve addition and subtraction problems of up to 3 digits

Additive relations B – MAO-WM-01, MA2-AR-01

Partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least 1000 to solve additive problems

Represents numbers A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-RN-01, MA3-RN-02

  • Whole numbers: Recognise, represent and order numbers in the millions
  • Whole numbers: Apply place value to partition, regroup and rename numbers to 1 billion
  • Decimals and percentages: Compare, order and represent decimals

Additive relations A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-AR-01

  • Apply efficient mental and written strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Use estimation and place value understanding to determine the reasonableness of solutions

Additive relations B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-AR-01

  • Choose and use efficient strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
