The Welcome Program

The Welcome Program aims to support newly arrived students who are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) during their transition to school in NSW.

The transition to school in Australia can be challenging for recently arrived EAL/D students, particularly those who have had refugee experiences.

Students have to learn English to access curriculum knowledge. They need to become familiar with new school structures, routines, expectations and ways of learning. They have to make new friends and deal with challenges that may be associated with traumatic experiences, bullying and racism.

This program provides orientation sessions which assist the formation of positive connections between EAL/D students and key people in the school. It provides essential information and support for newly arrived EAL/D students.
