Minimum expectations for schools during remote learning

It is expected that all NSW schools will prepare for the move to online learning if exceptional circumstances require it. The following shows when this might be required and how students’ learning can continue.​

Continuity of learning​

If possible, try not to disrupt the learning sequence and continue to use any programs or scope and sequences you have planned and incorporate the digital learning packs where appropriate. Consider how you can adapt these into single units of work that can be used both online and offline as well as in a more student-centred way. ​

Connecting​ with students​

Plan check-ins with all students using video conferencing daily. This is an important aspect of monitoring student wellbeing and progress and could be scheduled at the beginning of each day ideally. Additionally, deliver regularly scheduled lessons live via video conference using Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Zoom to enable explicit teaching, assessment and student feedback. Use discretion of lesson length and time online, guided by the needs of students.​

Professional learning​

School leadership team will facilitate updated professional learning (PL) to support teachers in delivering learning online on your school development day or PL timeslots. Online PL resources are also available through Professional learning on demand. Teachers will familiarise students with the department’s Digital learning packs ahead of learning from home.​


​Schools will continue to record and carefully monitor attendance both throughout face-to-face and remote learning contexts. Schools are expected to use a department-preferred online conferencing platform (Teams, Google Classroom) for the purposes of remote learning. Digital enablement​

Activate or use devices issued under remote learning provisions in 2020-2021, including internet dongles, to support home teaching and learning throughout 2022.​

You can access collaboration tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet for home teaching and learning. ​

Scenarios for learning from home

Advice for teachers for whole school and cohort.

  • Schools may provide own learning content via chosen platform (Google Classroom, Teams) in line with regular programs. ​
  • Teachers can incorporate existing guided learning packages into unit of work (visit the department's Early childhood, K-6 guided learning and 7-10 learning sequences pages).​
  • Schools should connect with all students using video conferencing (department preferred video platforms – Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Zoom).

  • Provide one unit of work via chosen platform (Google Classroom, Teams) in line with programs. ​
  • Schools are expected to follow regular learning timetables for video conferencing, afforded for each lesson.
  • Teachers can incorporate existing Guided Learning Packages into programs (visit the department's Early childhood, K-6 guided learning and 7-10 learning sequences pages).​

  • Teachers and school leadership teams should share the department’s digital learning packs to the school community.​
  • These packs include timetables that provide a suitable curriculum structure and address expected time spent on learning.​
  • This option will be used when learning cannot be facilitated by an educator and at the discretion of the school principal.
