Evidence-informed high potential and gifted education (HPGE) professional learning to support leaders and teachers.
The HPGE professional learning framework
The HPGE professional learning framework comprises tiers of increasing depth. Courses are progressively released – with Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 courses currently available.
All HPGE professional learning is currently found on the HPGE School Development Day professional learning sessions webpage (staff only). The exception to this is the School Leaders’ course which is a MyPL course (AC00017) linked from Tier 1 professional learning on this page.
HPGE Tier 1 professional learning
Tier 1 (working towards delivering) – orientation and planning designed for schools who have not yet engaged, or had limited engagement, with HPGE policy implementation.
The professional learning courses for Tier 1 are designed to build capability in shared understanding of HPGE policy and key concepts in staff. Leaders are supported to evaluate current HPGE understanding and practice in their schools.
- HPGE policy orientation – entrée self-paced online (staff only) (TPL00405) – This online course introduces the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy. It is a 90-minute course which can be delivered by a facilitator using the facilitator guide or completed individually as a self-paced option. A participant workbook is provided. It provides an overview and orientation to the HPGE policy:

- School leaders’ course (AC00017) – This 10-hour lead level accredited course is designed for those leading implementation of the HPGE policy in their school. The HPGE Evaluation and Planning Tool (EP Tool) is used to guide school planning. Participants conduct the HPGE Policy Attitudes and Teaching Practices Survey (ATPS) with staff. The online Entrée course (TPL00405) is a pre-requisite for enrolment for the Leader’s course. The course includes mid and post-course deliverables and is delivered in a range of modes:
- face to face over 2 non-consecutive days
- online live over 2 non-consecutive days
- blended – online (day 1) and face to face (day 2) over non-consecutive days.

- HPG students with disability (staff only) – Respond to needs of high potential and gifted students with disability.
- HPGE for non-teaching school staff (staff only) – Understand the High potential and gifted education (HPGE) policy and how it applies to non-teaching school staff.
- Revisiting Gifted Education (staff only) – Explore the research underpinning development of the HPGE policy and how it supports implementation.
- Using the HPGE Evaluation and Planning Tool (staff only) – The HPGE Evaluation and Planning (EP) Tool is an interactive resource to support school leaders with policy implementation.
- Using the signs of HPGE – a leadership resource (staff only) – Unpack the professional learning 'Using the signs of High Potential and Gifted Education – a leadership resource'.
HPGE Tier 2 professional learning
Tier 2 (delivering) – policy into practice designed for schools who are at the delivering phase of HPGE policy implementation.
The professional learning courses for Tier 2 support schools to create sustainable programs, processes and practices to cater for the learning needs of high potential and gifted students.
- Curriculum planning for every student in every classroom (staff only) – Explores evidence-informed strategies to plan and program for high potential and gifted students.
- Explicit teaching for HPG students (staff only) – Explore effective explicit teaching to meet the needs of high 3 potential and gifted students.
- Finding high potential – introduction (staff only) – Explore learning characteristics and assessment for high potential and gifted students across the four domains. The finding high potential professional learning series is aligned to HPGE policy point 1.2 – Assess and identify.
- Finding high potential in the creative domain (staff only) – Examine the range of assessment types and learning characteristics for high potential and gifted students in the creative domain.
- Finding high potential in the intellectual domain (staff only) – Examine the range of assessment types and learning characteristics for high potential and gifted students in the intellectual domain.
- Finding high potential in the physical domain (staff only) – Examine the range of assessment types and learning characteristics for high potential and gifted students in the physical domain.
- Finding high potential in the social-emotional domain (staff only) – Examine the range of assessment types and learning characteristics for high potential and gifted students in the social-emotional domain.
- Flexible grouping and classes for HPG students (staff only) – Explore the research and practice for purposeful and flexible grouping of high potential and gifted students across the four domains.
- From good to great: enrichment, extension, and extracurricular (staff only) – Explore how to develop a quality enrichment, extension and extracurricular program for high potential and gifted students.
- HPG students in the early years (staff only) – Unpack how HPGE aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).
- HPGE and the Game Changer Challenge (staff only) – Discover the power of the HPGE-aligned Game Changer Challenge to inspire students through the design thinking process.
- HPGE learning and support teams (staff only) – Catering for HPG students through learning and support teams.
- HPGE within Aboriginal Education (staff only) – Explore the learning needs of high potential and gifted Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.
- HPGE: exploring the regional, rural and remote context (staff only) – Support the needs of high potential and gifted students in rural, regional and remote areas.
- Supporting high potential and gifted EAL/D learners (staff only) – Assess, identify and support the needs of high potential and gifted EAL/D learners.
- Talent development for high potential and gifted students (staff only) – Understand talent development and evidence-informed strategies for high potential and gifted students.
- Unrecognised potential and underachievement (staff only) – Examine the causes of underachievement and how to translate high potential into high achievement.
HPGE Tier 3 professional learning
Tier 3 (sustaining and growing, through to excelling) – policy into practice designed for schools who are at the sustaining and growing phase of HPGE policy implementation.
The professional learning courses for Tier 3 support capability building for excellence in practice including a focus on leadership at a whole school level.
- Advanced learning pathways: acceleration (staff only) – Understanding advanced learning pathways for high potential and gifted students with a focus on acceleration.
- Creative potential through dramatic screenplay (staff only) – Explore formative assessment strategies to develop creativity through collaborative film making.
- Enhancing sport and physical activity (staff only) – Using the 'Sport and physical activity school health check' to cater for high potential and gifted students.
- Excelling through the HPGE Evaluation and Planning tool v3 (staff only) – Reassess your progress with HPGE policy implementation for one or more policy statement points and plan towards excelling.
- HPG students at risk (staff only) – Understand the diversity of HPG students at risk and explore ways to recognise potential and meet learning needs.
- Igniting creative potential through visual arts K–6 (staff only) – Learn how to design visual arts lessons to find and nurture creative potential.
- Empowering HPGE for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (staff only) – Join Anthony Galluzzo, Catherine Jeffery and Sue French as they share experiences and illustrations of practice to meet student goals and aspirations.
