Beginning a teaching career in rural NSW public schools

Hear from Ben Stewart, an early career teacher experiencing the benefits of a career in rural NSW with the Teachers in the Field Program.

As a pre-service teacher, Ben was eager to explore the opportunities available to teachers in regional, rural and remote NSW public schools. His career journey so far is a testament to the value of seizing opportunities and embracing change.

Towards the end of his initial teacher education studies, Ben participated in the Beyond the Line Program study tour which saw him visit 5 schools across north-western NSW. This solidified his passion for teaching in rural NSW. On his return home and with his studies nearly complete, Ben found himself with an unexpected but exciting opportunity that would lead him to teach in Broken Hill, where he now contributes to the Teachers in the Field Program.

After reading an article featured in JobFeed, Ben’s interest was sparked and the decision to leave his familiar surroundings of Newcastle and venture to the Far West was made. Ben is based at a hub school in Broken Hill where he spends the majority of his time. He also works with various schools across the region through Classcover, allowing him to experience the unique educational environments of multiple local schools.

As he reflects on his journey, Ben explains that he felt a deep calling to return to rural education, a passion that stemmed from his own upbringing in Tamworth. ‘I grew up through rural education and loved the opportunities it provided. I wanted to give back to the system which gave me so much,’ Ben shared.

His new home in Broken Hill is vastly different from his time in regional centres and, for Ben, this new chapter has brought invaluable experiences and rewards. The local community spirit and small-town culture where he can ‘appreciate the simpler things in life’ has become a key source of joy. Another of his highlights is the sense of community among his colleagues who welcomed and embraced him. ‘They took me in straight out of university and they’ve been incredibly supportive,’ Ben describes.

For those considering a similar path, Ben’s advice is simple yet powerful ‘Be flexible and give it a go. It’s a rewarding opportunity that opens up so many new opportunities and perspectives.’

For those seeking to explore a rural pathway, the department has a range of opportunities for pre-service teachers. The Rural Professional Experience Program supports future teachers to complete a placement in a rural NSW public school. The Beyond the Line Program also facilitates second, third and final-year Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching students to travel with the department on an expenses-paid, 5-day study tour to experience teaching at selected regional, rural and remote NSW public schools.

Ben’s move from Newcastle to Broken Hill has not only enriched his career but allowed him to contribute to the system which shaped his own educational journey. It’s clear that for Ben, the adventure is just beginning and his positive impact will continue to resonate throughout the region.
