What support is available to parents and carers?

There are a range of resources and services available to help parents and carers support their child’s learning, behaviour and wellbeing.

Parenting and wellbeing resources

Essentials toolkit

The department has created an Essentials toolkit for parents and carers. It includes practical self-care tips, as well as recommended parenting books, apps, podcasts and websites. The toolkit is available as a downloadable 8-page PDF booklet (PDF 1.51MB).

Where parents and carers can go for help

If you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing, behaviour or safety, there are a few first steps you can take:

  • Talk to your child’s school

Start with your child’s teacher or an identified contact person. Follow the school’s process for sharing concerns as outlined in their School behaviour support and management plan available on the school website.

  • Ask for support from the school

The school can connect you with wellbeing staff or help you access specialist services if needed.

Working together early often helps resolve concerns sooner.

External support services

Sometimes families need extra support outside of school. This might be for your child’s wellbeing or mental health, or because your child would like to talk to someone outside their school or family.

There are trusted services that support children and young people, as well as parents and carers. These services can provide advice, counselling and support by phone, online or in person.

Need language support?

If you need help communicating in English, you can use the Telephone Interpreter Service.
