The NSW Community Languages Schools Program supports community language schools and teachers to deliver high-quality teaching and learning. Support includes professional learning, resources, and access to expert advice.
Professional learning
Community languages teachers can access a range of professional learning opportunities.
Community Languages Schools Program conferences
The Program delivers three conferences each year for teachers in community languages schools. Information and flyers are emailed to community language schools and posted on the Program’s Facebook page.
Sydney Institute for Community Languages Education (SICLE)
SICLE provides professional learning programs in partnership with the NSW Department of Education.
NSW Community Languages Teaching Programs
Foundation program (60 hours)
Supports teachers to:
- understand how students learn languages
- engage students in language and culture
- plan lessons and assess learning
- develop teaching resources
Advanced program (60 hours)
Supports teachers to:
- plan units of work
- develop advanced teaching strategies
- use technology in teaching
- mentor other teachers
Community Languages School Governance and Management Program (24 hours)
Supports school leaders to:
- lead and manage community language schools
- plan and implement policies
- manage staff
- understand legal and financial responsibilities

Program Education Officers provide tailored support to community languages schools.

- deliver workshops and training

- provide advice on teaching and school operations

Languages networks
Community languages teachers can access statewide support through languages networks.
Teaching resources and tools
Open Language Portal
The Open Language Portal contains over 2,000 teaching resources in 17 languages that have been created and shared by Community Languages teachers. It provides free access to language specific resources, generic language teaching resources, and professional learning information.
Henry Parkes Equity Resource Centre
The Henry Parkes Equity Resource Centre provides access to a wide range of teaching and learning resources and multimedia materials for community languages schools.

The Languages NSW website provides updates on professional learning, events, and news for language teachers.
