Our journey

We are on a digital transformation journey and have made progress towards becoming one of the leading digital educators in the world. The Digital Strategy clarifies our strategic priorities and paves the path for future transformation.

We operate one of the largest IT ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere supporting the second largest education provider in the world.

Across government digital priorities have evolved and the department has aligned to meet these needs including:

  • NSW Beyond Digital Strategy
  • NSW Government Cyber Strategy
  • NSW Data Strategy
  • NSW Cloud Strategy
  • NSW Department of Education Schools Digital Strategy.

We have made progress by investing in initiatives that address key challenges in our education delivery including:

  • Rural Access Gap Program: Investing in digital infrastructure and building digital capability to close the gap between rural and metro schools.

  • Online enrolment: Simplifying school enrolment and reducing the administrative overhead associated with enrolment for schools and families.

  • Universal Resources Hub: Providing a central place for teaching and school-based staff to access and share quality-assured resources.

At the same time, we have also continued to learn from experiences such as the cyber attack in 2021. Early detection and swift action from our teams in ITD greatly limited the impact of that breach and have since set the benchmark for other NSW Government agencies.

We will now look to the future as we design and build digital services that empower our department and enable our journey towards Destination YOU.

Our challenges

We’re experiencing challenges that include rising cyber and privacy threats, cumbersome administrative tasks in an increasingly complex technology landscape with rising customer expectations.

  1. Schools report insufficient access to devices, inequity of network connectivity and increasing administrative tasks which are impacting on education delivery.

  2. A complex technology landscape, legacy systems and limited access to quality data are driving the need for change and a realignment of digital priorities.

  3. The Information Technology Directorate (ITD) is facing significant challenges in their role to better deliver value and serve the varying needs of the department.

In response to these challenges, we have developed six pillars of investment to align our strategic objectives.
