Booking assignments 3 hours or less

If an assignment is under 3 hours and meets the Interpreting and translations guidelines, schools should select a provider in their area and book assignments directly as detailed below.

Metropolitan Sydney

For languages other than Auslan, schools can choose which of the two major providers they wish to book with i.e. TIS National or Multicultural NSW. Where it meets the needs of individual schools private providers may also be used.

For Auslan bookings, schools can book with Deaf Connect or Multicultural NSW. Other providers may also be used if they better meet the needs of individual schools. Examples of other providers are Wesley Mission and Speak Your Language.

Hunter New England Area Health

This organisation provides interpreters to schools in the Newcastle and Hunter area. Some interpreters can be sourced through this provider for other regional areas, for example Tamworth, Armidale and Grafton. Not all languages are available and some schools are not located in areas where interpreters are available. Auslan is available from this provider.

Wollongong

*Important information - Wollongong City Council has discontinued its interpreter service. Schools in the Wollongong area will need to book with TIS National, Multicultural NSW or Speak Your Language for onsite bookings. Arabic is available through Speak Your Language for onsite interpreting but it is unclear what other languages are available through this provider.

Please note: As was the case with Wollongong City Council only a limited number of languages is available for onsite bookings. Please follow the instructions on how to book with each of the suppliers and they will contact meeting organisers if they can't supply. Schools may need to use the online system or the telephone services if that is the case.

If schools in the Wollongong area would prefer to have an online assignment via Zoom, Teams or another platform these services can be provided by TIS National, Hunter New England Local Health, Speak Your Language and Multicultural NSW. . Please note TIS National does not supply Auslan interpreters. Please see the Online interpreting link for information on how to book with these providers.

Speak Your Language

This organisation may provide some languages to schools in the Wollongong area. However it is unclear which languages apart from Arabic are available.

If an onsite interpreter is required rather than a video interpreter you will need to fill in the form and send it to the provider and they will contact you if the language is not available. If possible please try to give more than 48 hours notice for an onsite booking to avoid them charging the 35% urgency fee.

Download and then complete the Interpreter request form (PDF 838 KB) and email your request to onsite@syl.com.au

You should receive confirmation of your booking within 48 hours of making your booking. If you haven't received confirmation please phone Speak Your Language on 1300 000 795 to make an enquiry.

Deaf Connect

This organisation cannot provide Auslan interpreting services to all schools in the Wollongong area. Oniline interpreting might be another way to access Auslan interpreters when onsite interpreters are unavailable.

Phone 1300 773 803 prior to booking to check if your needs can be met and if travel charges apply. To book:

Regional NSW

Unfortunately there are very few onsite interpreters available in areas outside of Metropolitan Sydney, Hunter New England and the Wollongong area. There is a very limited number available in the following areas: Bathurst - 1 Bengali interpreter; Albury - 1 Croatian, 1 Slovenian and 7 Nepali interpreters. To access these interpreters bookings must be made through TIS National.

If onsite interpreters are not available schools should use the telephone interpreter service or make online bookings.

Auslan onsite interpreters

If you require an Auslan interpreter, please check with the following service providers to see if local interpreters are available. You can also check to see if other platforms such as online interpreting can be used.

Where local interpreters are available, follow the steps required to make a booking.

Deaf Connect bookings

Complete the Interpreter request form (PDF 838 KB) (staff only) and email your form to interpreting@deafconnect.org.au
