Online interpreting

Information about available online interpreting services.

If schools prefer to have their interpreting session online this can be done using some of the agencies that are currently used for onsite interpreting. Where it meets the needs of individual schools, private providers may also be used. Wollongong City Council does not currently provide this service.

Some of the agencies providing this service are TIS National, Hunter New England Local Health, Multicultural NSW and Deaf Connect.

Virtual assignments with TIS National must be booked via your online bookings portal at TIS Online. If you don't have an account with TIS National to make bookings online please follow the instructions on the onsite interpreting page to request one. For the other providers, choose the preferred supplier when completing your Interpreter Request Form (assignments 3 hours or less).

Before booking the interpreter

Prior to the meeting the staff member who requires the meeting will need to contact the parent to discuss the assignment, including finding a convenient date and time. If it is ascertained that the parent has a computer and is able to connect to the Internet they will be able to join the meeting from home by clicking on the link you send them. If the parent doesn't have the technology required you could invite them to the school for the meeting (providing the Principal agrees). You may wish to use the Telephone Interpreting Service to have these initial discussions.

TIS National

Booking an interpreter for a video remote interpreting consultation is similar to booking an on-site interpreter via TIS Online.

You will need to complete the booking form and provide:

  • details of video conferencing platform to use. Platforms may include, but not limited to Skype, Zoom, WebEx or healthdirect Video Call
  • access codes or credentials to join the video conference
  • hyperlink for the interpreter to join the video session, and
  • contact name and phone number at your agency, should the interpreter encounter any issues.

You will receive an email confirmation when you submit your request, and when TIS National assigns an interpreter.

It is important to note that agency clients are responsible for resolving connectivity and technical issues related to their video interpreting session. During the booking process, we will ask you to provide the name and phone number of someone the interpreter can call should they encounter any technical issues during interpreting assignments.

Please note that the minimum booking charge for the Telehealth Video Interpreting service is 90 minutes.

Telehealth video interpreting guide for agencies is available in the Help & support section on TIS Online. The guide contains information and instructions on booking interpreters for Telehealth video consultations.
