Road safety education: SSPs and support unit teachers K-12
This professional learning is designed specifically for Schools for Specific Purposes (SSP) and Support Unit teachers working with students from K-12.
The full day workshop supports teachers to deliver road safety education tailored to the unique learning needs of students with additional support requirements, fostering inclusive practices that build independence and lifelong safety skills.
Students with disability face higher risks as road users, potentially up to three times more than their peers.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
engage with PDHPE (2024) syllabuses to identify and adapt road safety content to meet the diverse learning needs of students requiring additional support
explore resources, including Safety Town and On the Move, to develop contextualised and accessible teaching programs
increase their knowledge and understanding of how to manage road safety within and around schools for students requiring additional support
- review strategies for promoting safe travel with parents, carers and the community.

Funding
- Casual relief funding is available if your school has not attended in the last 4 years.
- Additional teachers are welcome to attend with relief paid by own school.
Accreditation
This professional learning:
- provides 5 hours of accredited professional development
- addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers 2.1.2 and 3.4.2 (proficient stage)
Participant feedback

An optional professional development day is available to support participants to develop a road safety education project with a whole school approach:
- policy, environment and culture
- parent, carer and community partnership
- curriculum.
